Consumption & Sustainability

Fostering consumption and production patterns that promote fairness and conserve natural resources is a central objective of sustainable development. Forging pathways towards greater sustainability is a complex and challenging task. Consumption is influenced by a variety of interdependent ecological, economic and social factors. Similarly, our behaviour as individuals is shaped by systemic structures. On the Science Platform Sustainability 2030 a group of experts is working to cast light on these aspects in order to develop impulses for the implementation and future development of the German Sustainable Development Strategy.

Mobility & Sustainability

Mobility plays a central role in many societies and is frequently viewed as an expression of quality of life. But our mobility also devours finite resources on a massive scale, produces emissions that are harmful to the climate, and negatively impacts air quality and human health. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and the German Strategy for Sustainable Development make frequent mentions of mobility, but does not focus on this issue explicitly. The Science Platform Sustainability 2030 seeks to raise awareness of this crucial issue and to develop policy recommendations that will advance the transition towards more sustainable transportation systems.

Global Commons & Sustainability

The global commons are the foundations of life. Among these shared natural resources are the oceans and deep sea, the atmosphere, and the Polar Regions. Despite our dependency on them, humanity has failed to protect the global commons. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and the German Strategy for Sustainable Development both seek to tackle this issue. Effective political processes and structures are critical to their protection – and yet few exist. A group of experts at the Science Platform Sustainability 2030 will fill this gap and develop actionable policy recommendations to address this situation within the scope of the German Sustainable Development Strategy.
