The Research Coordinators of the Science Platform Sustainability 2030

Research activities undertaken through the Science Platform Sustainability 2030 are coordinated by the international scientific networks Sustainable Development Solutions Network Germany (SDSN Germany), the German Committee for Sustainability Research in Future Earth (DKN Future Earth), and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), which also hosts the platform’s secretariat.

SDSN Germany

The German Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Germany) was founded in April 2014 by leading German knowledge centres. The network pools knowledge, experience and capacities of German academic, corporate and civil society organisations in order to contribute to the sustainable development of Germany as well as to German efforts for sustainable development across the globe.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has broken new ground in 2015: it comprises universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that go beyond previous Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as they address all dimensions of sustainable development in all countries. Germany, too, will have to find solutions for its own future development, and in this sense be a developing country. Therefore, SDSN Germany aims at promoting sustainable development as a guiding principle for politics, business and society with a particular focus on Germany and Europe.

Member organisations of SDSN Germany are at the same time members to the global SDSN. Other organisations are invited to join the network as partners. Dirk Messner and Gesine Schwan (HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform) co-chair the SDSN Germany Leadership Council. The secretariat is hosted by the DIE.

DKN Future Earth

The German Committee Future Earth acts as the national representative for international relationships, developments and activities within the international research programs Future Earth and WCRP. On a national level, the DKN Future Earth provides support for interdisciplinary and integrated research and for the identification of relevant research topics within a national as well as international context. In this regard, the DKN Future Earth encourages the collaboration between natural and social sciences, the humanities and engineering to advance research activities that help shape the pathways for a global sustainable society, to find a systematic approach for problems and to generate societal relevant knowledge. The dialogue between stakeholders from politics, economy and society, as well as the integration of their knowledge is a crucial part of Future Earth research activities. The DKN Future Earth supports the German community in these processes and encourages their further development.

IASS Potsdam

The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) was officially founded in 2009 as a joint initiative of the German Federal Government, the Federal State of Brandenburg and the research organisations of the German Science Alliance. It conducts research with the goal of identifying, advancing, and guiding transformation processes towards sustainable societies. Their research practice is transdisciplinary, transformative, and co-creative. The institute cooperates with partners in academia, political institutions, administrations, civil society, and the business community to understand sustainability challenges and generate potential solutions.
