Dialogue of the Scientific Advisory Boards

On the initiative of the Science Platform and in cooperation with SDSN Germany, representatives from ten scientific advisory boards to the Federal Government and ten federal ministries from a range of policy fields met for the first time to discuss challenges for political action and the implementation of the German Strategy for Sustainable Development.

The scientific advisory boards of the German Government are permanent bodies with an advisory function. The Federal Chancellery and many of the federal ministries are served by multiple advisory boards, which assess government action and advise decision-makers in the form of expert opinions, statements, and recommendations.

Against this background, the Science Platform Sustainability 2030 and SDSN Germany have established a new dialogue to foster debate among the scientific advisory boards of the Federal Government and various government agencies and ministries on relevant cross-sectional issues, conflicting objectives, and the role of the advisory boards and scientific policy advisers in the implementation of the German Strategy for Sustainable Development.

On Wednesday, 23 May 2018, representatives from ten scientific advisory boards of the German Government and various federal ministries came together at an inaugural session to discuss the challenges for political action and the opportunities to advance the German Strategy for Sustainable Development. These discussions highlighted the existence of an abundance of cross-sectional issues. 2019 a further meeting took place. The key results of the dialogue was summarized in the report “Beirätedialog 2019: Empfehlungen zur Weiterentwicklung der Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie”. The report was handed over to the chancellery in Feburary 2020.
